Day 1 - Dublin

IMG 3254

No complaints about my flights.  I left Tampa at 4:30 pm yesterday afternoon on JetBlue to JFK where I connected to my 9 pm Aer Lingus flight to Dublin.  We left the gate a few minutes early, were number 3 for takeoff (a miracle at JFK), and arrived in Dublin 30 minutes early.  And I got a bonus: my luggage was out almost immediately.  This is a good omen!

At 49°, this morning was a bit brisk for my thinned out Florida blood but the wi-fi equipped AirCoach bus arrived minutes after I did, and I was checking into Buswells at 9:30.  Of course my room was not ready, which is usually the case with early morning flights, so I sat in the lobby with a complementary pot of tea and caught up on email.   The National Library opened late this morning because of staff training, but I was there by noon and got a few hours of research and was able to order some material to review tomorrow.

I was hoping that the construction around the center of Dublin would be less this year, but that’s not the case.  There are two rapid transit lines in Dublin called the Luas, one on each side of the Liffey.  They finally decided to connect them and for the past two years, the streets have been torn up.  Part of Dawson Street from Molesworth to Nassau is completely closed and there is major construction around Trinity College, at the foot of Grafton Street and down Nassau.  Maybe next year.

Dinner was early, it’s been a long 24 hours. I headed over to Temple Bar for one of my favorites, Guinness Beef Stew with (gluten free) brown bread and a glass of Baumers (hard cider).  Food allergies are taken very seriously over here, and menus are clearly marked.  You can get a gluten free toast with breakfast, a gluten free sandwich at O’Brien’s and even gluten free fish and chips.

If you haven’t been to Dublin, this will hopefully give you an idea of what it’s like.  I think it is a place everyone should visit.

   Happy Hunting!
