Ireland - Here I Come!

Michael Daly

Michael and Thomas Daly
of Crumlin, Kilvine, Mayo

Tomorrow I leave for Ireland.  I’d like to say that I’m completely organized…but I’m not.  Hopefully I’ll get closer today.   I’m leaving Florida about 1 pm and my flight from New York  is at 6:30 tomorrow evening.  I usually try to take a late flight into Dublin, but this year I’m flying into Shannon, and didn’t have a choice.  With the late flight, I pull out my blanket and buckle my seat belt over it, put in my ear buds with relaxing music and am asleep before wheels up.  I splurge with an exit row seat…no one in front of me so I can stretch out. I’m not sure whether I’ll be able to sleep on the earlier flight, but with a 6 am arrival in Dublin and a two hour drive I hope so.  I’ve been trying to change my body clock a bit…to bed at 7:30 and up at 3 am.  It’s amazing how much I can accomplish a great deal in the four hours before I head out for a bike ride!  Maybe I should change my schedule permanently.

I begin my trip this year in Mayo.  I’ll be staying in Tuam on the border of Galway and Mayo.  The parish of the Dalys is Kilvine and I had hoped to view the parish records there since the National Library does not have them.  The priest however has replied that the records are not available for review but if I provided specific information they would look up the information for me. It’s always better to view the original record however, I already have the transcriptions from the Irish Family History Foundation, so I won’t bother with a request.

I’ll be in Mayo for two days and visiting cousins on Friday and Saturday, then off to Longford for more visits.  If you’re interested, you can follow my progress over the next two weeks as I blog about my trip.

   Happy Hunting!
