It's My 9th Blogiversary!

I can’t believe that I’ve been blogging for nine years!   My first blog appeared on 30 July 2007 titled “How I Got Here” and on most Monday evenings I’m in my office attempting to write something people will find interesting.  Back in 2007 I began my website using Apple’s iWeb software.  When I was a Regional Manager for Apple, my systems engineers used to say I knew enough to be dangerous…so the idea of learning HTML wasn’t high on my list of things to do.  iWeb was a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) editor that allowed me to type, drag and drop and create links to other pages and sites without any need for that “techie” stuff.  And for four years it worked just fine!

Alas, as Apple was inclined to do, in 2011 they decided to drop iWeb.  Now what!  I looked at a lot of software and eventually settled on Sandvox, which is the platform I am still using.  The transition was not easy.  It took me most of the summer to painstakingly copy the text from my old site and  reformat it for the new site.  I didn’t bring over all of my old blogs as some were outdated.  There are currently about 350 blogs, most of which relate to Irish research.

Sandvox is also a WYSIWYG editor and it is a Mac application, not a web-based editor.  That means that I have to create my web pages including my blog, on my Mac and upload it to my hosting site, which is GoDaddy.  It’s not difficult, but it means I have to have my MacBook Air with me, there are no apps for my iPad or iPhone.  There are also some things it doesn’t do well.  Finding something on my blog can be difficult.  Although there is an Archive in the right sidebar, it is simply by date and not by topic.  The best way to find something is to use the Google search engine, type the search string followed by  For example: Griffith’s Valuation  I’ve been considering another update to a web-based editor, but haven’t had the time or energy to re-do the site.  Maybe next year.

You can subscribe to my blog (also in the right sidebar) and receive an email when I’ve added something new, or you can follow me on my Facebook page (this one is only for Irish Genealogy…no grandbaby pictures) or on Twitter.  On both my Facebook and Twitter pages I curate information that I think will be of interest to those doing Irish research.

I’d love to hear from you if you enjoy the blog (comments are another thing that aren’t easily implemented on Sandvox, so the best place to comment is on Facebook).  Let me know if there is something you’d like to hear about as I’m always looking for interesting topics.

So Happy Blogaversary to me and to all who follow me.  Here’s to another nine years!

   Happy Hunting!
