Irish Genealogy:  The 1926 Census of Ireland

Good News!  In an article published in the Irish Times yesterday, the Irish Minister for Heritage, Jimmy Deenihan said that the government intends to push for the release of the 1926 census this year.  Ireland has a 100 year rule regarding the release of census data, however, both the 1901 and 1911 censuses were released early due to the loss of so many records in the 1922 fire.  He states that there is “widespread approval” for the release which will require a change in legislation.  The Department of Tourism is planning an event next year to encourage the Irish Diaspora to visit Ireland.  Sounds like we should all start planning now!  Stay tuned...a research trip to Ireland in 2012 is in the planning stages.  (Email me if you might be interested.)

Happy Hunting!
